Shalan Alhamwy - Musician

Ghent, Belgium, 16 Sep 2020, On the occasion of a concert in the Handelsbeurs, I made a portrait of Shalan, a Syrian musician violinist virtuoso and composer who crosses a classical oeuvre with oriental influences. Shalan is a sensitive man and reflects: “The lockdown damaged the cultural sector. For me it was not immediately the most inspiring period that you would expect for a musician. I had to stay home, neighbours too, I could hear the neighbors' footsteps and noise. It immediately reminded me of the bombing during the war in Syria and made me very restless. Perhaps unresolved trauma that surfaced again. I translated that into a composition, it will be premiered by Picea Orientalis on 3 october in De bijloke.
